Two Hawaii Island residents — Sulma Gandhi and Lisa Hadway — have been selected for the 2014-2015 Omidyar Fellows program. This leadership development program cultivates, trains and educates emerging leaders to shape Hawaii’s future.
Gandhi is the director of student health and wellness programs at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. As the campus public health officer, she oversees care that integrates prevention, medical and mental health services for UH-Hilo and Hawaii Community College. A Puna resident, she serves on the governor-appointed Hawaii Service Area Board, Suicide Prevention Taskforce, the Prosecutor’s Sexual Assault Response Team and Drug Free Coalition.
Hadway is the administrator for the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife in Hilo. A Hilo resident, she is responsible for managing the diverse mandates of the division from watershed protection to outdoor recreation. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in zoology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa specializing in ecology, evolution and conservation biology. She also has an executive master’s degree in business administration from UH.
